چکیده
Linking fluids as they twist and writhe Helicity is a measure of corkscrew-like motion described by the amount of twisting, writhing, and linking in a fluid. Total helicity is conserved for ideal fluids, but how helicity changes in real fluids with even tiny amounts of viscosity has been an open question. Scheeler et al. provide a complete measurement of total helicity in a real fluid by using a set of hydrofoils to track linking, twisting, and writhing (see the Perspective by Moffatt). They show that twisting dissipates total helicity, whereas writhing and linking conserve it. This provides a fundamental insight into tornadogenesis, atmospheric flows, and the formation of turbulence. —BG

Guiding Linear Deductions with Semantics
Guidance is a central issue in Automatic Theorem Proving systems due to the enormity of the search space that these systems navigate. Semantic guidance uses semantic information to direct the path an ATP system takes through the search space. The use of semantic information is potentially more powerful than syntactic information for guidance. This research aimed to discover a method for incorpo...
متن کاملExploiting temporal predictability: Event-related potential correlates of task-supportive temporal cue processing in auditory distraction.
The human cognitive system has various functions to enhance performance in tasks requiring responses to stimuli. When potentially occurring stimuli are known, we can establish selective attention sets and ignore task-irrelevant events while attending task-relevant ones. When the stimulation is temporally structured, we can rely on constant temporal relationships between stimulus events to prepa...
متن کاملRecruitment for online access panels
This paper describes a German study which compared eight ways of recruiting members for an online access panel. Two thousand respondents, divided into four groups of 500, were invited to sign up with the panel via email, fax, flier or letter. Half of each sample’s invitations offered a cash lottery, into which new panellists would be entered, whereas the other half of the invitations did not of...
متن کاملThe Mulligan concept: its application in the management of spinal conditions.
The Mulligan concept encompasses a number of mobilising treatment techniques that can be applied to the spine, these include 'NAGs' (natural apophyseal glides), 'SNAGs' (sustained natural apophyseal glides), and 'SMWLMs' (spinal mobilisations with limb movements). These techniques are described and the general principles of examination and treatment are outlined. Clinical examples are used to i...
